PFM stands for Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal. A PFM crown consists of a metal coping (inner shell) that is bonded to the implant or prepared tooth, over which tooth-coloured ceramic porcelain is layered or pressed to provide the aesthetic finish. The metal core gives the restoration its strength while the porcelain mimics the natural appearance of the tooth.
With proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, PFM restorations can last 10–15 years or more. Longevity depends on factors such as the patient's bite forces, oral hygiene habits, and the quality of the preparation and cementation. Posterior PFM restorations in bruxism patients may have a shorter lifespan due to high occlusal loading.
Yes. Jalandhar Dental Lab uses high-quality, biocompatible alloys for all PFM restorations. We offer non-precious, semi-precious, Tilite, and DMLS laser-sintered options. Patients with known metal sensitivities should inform their dentist so the appropriate alloy can be selected — Tilite PFM is an excellent choice for allergy-sensitive patients.
Regular PFM uses a conventionally cast metal coping. Laser PFM (DMLS) builds the coping layer-by-layer from a digital file using a laser, eliminating casting distortion and achieving a superior marginal fit. CAD/CAM PFM mills the coping from a pre-sintered metal disc using a 5-axis milling machine, offering consistent and reproducible accuracy. All three are then layered with high-quality porcelain.
Yes, PFM restorations can be used for anterior teeth. Our ceramists use advanced layering techniques to achieve natural translucency and aesthetics in the anterior region. However, patients who prioritise maximum aesthetics may prefer all-ceramic options such as e.max or translucent zirconia, which offer superior light transmission without the risk of a grey metal shadow at the gingival margin.
Please include: a clear prescription form specifying the tooth number, type (crown/bridge), alloy preference, and shade; accurate impressions (vinyl polysiloxane or digital STL file); opposing arch impression or bite registration; and shade photograph if available. For bridges, please indicate the number of units and pontic design.
Standard turnaround for PFM crowns and bridges is 5–7 working days from receipt of impressions. Laser PFM and CAD/CAM PFM may have slightly different timelines due to the digital workflow. Rush cases can often be accommodated — please contact us at the time of ordering.
