Monolith Zirconia

Monolithic Zirconia (also called Full―Contour Zirconia) is fabricated as a single, solid zirconia unit with no porcelain overlay. This eliminates the risk of ceramic chipping or fracture, making it one of the most durable restoration options available.

With advances in zirconia polishing and surface characterization, modern monolithic zirconia restorations can achieve a highly polished finish that minimizes wear on opposing teeth. Available in a range of shades and with optional staining for improved aesthetics, monolithic zirconia is particularly popular for posterior teeth and bruxism patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Monolithic (full-contour) zirconia is a restoration milled entirely from a single zirconia block with no separate porcelain veneering layer. The full anatomy of the crown is milled into the zirconia itself, then stained and glazed. Because there is no brittle porcelain overlay, the restoration is far more resistant to fracture and chipping than PFM or layered ceramic.
Yes. Monolithic zirconia is the restoration of choice for bruxism patients. Its exceptional fracture resistance and absence of a porcelain overlay make it highly durable under heavy occlusal loading. A well-fitted, polished monolithic zirconia crown minimises wear on the opposing dentition when properly adjusted.
Highly polished monolithic zirconia has been shown to cause less wear on opposing natural enamel than glazed zirconia or unpolished ceramic surfaces. We finish all monolithic restorations with a high-gloss chairside polish and glaze cycle. Ensuring the occlusion is properly balanced during the fitting appointment further minimises wear.
Modern high-translucency monolithic zirconia achieves excellent aesthetics for posterior restorations. For anterior crowns where detailed characterisation and maximum translucency are required, e.max or translucent multilayer zirconia may deliver superior results. We offer coloured and characterised monolith options to improve anterior aesthetics where needed.
Absolutely. Monolithic zirconia is one of the most reliable materials for posterior and full-arch bridges due to its superior strength and resistance to flexure. We regularly fabricate long-span monolithic zirconia bridges. Please specify the bridge units and pontic design on the prescription.
