Bite Splints

Custom Bite Splints (occlusal splints) are precision―fabricated appliances used in the management of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), bruxism, and to stabilize the occlusion post―orthodontic treatment. Unlike night guards, bite splints are designed to achieve a specific therapeutic jaw position.

Jalandhar Dental Lab fabricates both stabilization splints and anterior positioning splints in high―quality hard acrylic, with a highly polished occlusal surface that allows the opposing teeth to glide freely and evenly.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

A stabilisation (Michigan) splint provides a flat, even occlusal surface that allows the condyles to seat in a musculoskeletally stable position, reducing muscle hyperactivity and TMD symptoms. An anterior repositioning splint (ARS) guides the mandible into a forward position to decompress the temporomandibular joint — used in specific cases of disc displacement. Please specify which type is required on the prescription.
Stabilisation splints are most commonly fabricated for the maxillary arch, as this provides better retention and a larger occlusal surface for balancing. Mandibular splints are indicated where the patient cannot tolerate an upper appliance or in specific clinical situations. Please specify on the prescription.
Please send accurate VPS impressions of both arches, a centric relation (CR) bite registration, and a prescription specifying the splint type and arch. If a face-bow transfer is available, it will improve the accuracy of the articulator mounting and the resulting occlusal balance of the splint.
The occlusal surface is highly polished to allow smooth, frictionless gliding of opposing teeth. This is critical for muscle relaxation and joint decompression. The splint is balanced in centric relation with even, simultaneous contacts on all posterior teeth, and anterior disclusion in all excursive movements.
A hard acrylic stabilisation splint provides significant protection against tooth wear from bruxism in addition to its therapeutic TMD benefits, so it can serve a dual function. However, the design intent differs: a night guard is primarily a protective device, while a bite splint is designed to achieve a specific therapeutic jaw position. Patients with active TMD symptoms benefit most from a proper stabilisation splint.
