Which type of night guard should I prescribe? +

The choice depends on the severity of bruxism. Soft night guards are comfortable for mild bruxers but may increase bruxism activity in some patients. Hard acrylic guards are recommended for moderate to severe bruxers as they provide a stable, non-yielding surface that helps break the bruxism habit. Dual-laminate guards (soft inner, hard outer) offer a compromise of comfort and durability.

Which arch should the night guard be made on? +

Night guards are most commonly fabricated for the maxillary (upper) arch, as this typically provides better retention and is easier for patients to adapt to. Mandibular night guards are an option for patients who find upper guards uncomfortable. Please specify your preference on the prescription.

What impressions do I need to send? +

Please send an accurate alginate or vinyl polysiloxane (VPS) impression of the arch for which the guard is being fabricated. If occlusal coverage and balance are important (as in splint therapy), please also include a bite registration and opposing arch impression.

How thick is the standard night guard? +

Standard hard acrylic night guards are fabricated at approximately 2–3 mm thickness. Soft guards are typically 2 mm. Dual-laminate guards consist of a 1.5 mm soft inner layer and a 1 mm hard outer shell. Custom thickness can be requested based on clinical requirements.

What is the turnaround time for a night guard? +

Standard turnaround for a custom night guard is 3–5 working days from receipt of impressions. Rush orders are available on request, subject to workload.
